Casi todas las palabras que nos hemos dicho ya no están
y si volviesen al pie de la letra, quizá no las

daríamos por buenas.
¡Pero en décadas se ha mantenido
el tenor de nuestra charla!
(Tenor es lo que entendíamos por “alma”.)
Por ejemplo,
nuestra forma de bromear
mediante incongruencias y elipsis
que aposta suprimen el contexto
anticipándose
al desgaste del tiempo.

“Cuando el tamaño sí importa”,
se lee en la valla publicitaria
que muestra el producto
en pequeñito,
en una esquina,
para que tengamos que encontrarlo.
Venid a buscarme.
Me quedo
detrás de estas palabras.

Almost all the words we’ve said to one another are gone
and if they were retrieved, verbatim, we might not acknowledge them.
But the tenor of our talk
has been constant across the years!
(Tenor is what we meant by ‘soul.’)
For instance,
The way we joke
by using non-sequiturs, elliptical remarks
which deliberately suppress context
in advance
of time’s rub-out.

“When size really counts,”
the billboard says
showing the product
tiny,
in one corner,
so we need to search for it.

Come find me.
I stand
behind these words.
