Journey by night
On the high road through the Gorges du Tarn
When the car bucked at a flat turn
And bowled at the edge
On a wedge of rubber screaming,
Even then, with the gates of panic breached
We did not break our silence of hours,
Our deep trust in the willed path.
And if I now say the depth of time touched us,
the sense of the great bowl we run down in a curve,
It is only to say what as a child I knew
-there is nowhere to fall
and speed can buttress will-
when you have somewhere to go you simply go.
